I'm still tweaking this painting somewhat. I'm trying to mess around more with more paper ephemera in my paintings. This is an acrylic and mixed media on a 12 x 12 wood panel.

I love antennas. To me they symbolize the fascination we all have with connecting to something more; something higher, other. Whether we choose to admit it or not, I think we all want to know what our purpose is, why we are here, and if there is something or someone greater than us out there. I think we all want to feel like we are in touch with more than just the mundane and day to day. When we put our "antennas" up, we are showing that we believe that there is something more than us. We are trusting that our signal is being sent out and that somewhere it will be received.

I doodled this design in my sketchbook about a year ago, and I rediscovered it the other day. I love how the wording isn't completely obvious at first, and I think it's just a fun little design. It didn't take me long to stitch, only about two sessions. Considering my obsession and consistent theme of cityscapes and skylines in my art work, you would think I live in a city. But I only live in a little southern town, and the skyline of my town is not really art worthy. I've thought about making art out of real city skylines, but I don't feel that I have a connection with any major cities, being that my only experience with them is short visits. Ah well, I guess imaginary cities are fine for now.

So, I've been sick with a gross cold today so I have been rambling on the internet looking for art inspiration and bright things to cheer me up. I've always wanted to be able to screen print my own prints and t-shirts. Something about the process appeals to my concrete sequential OCD nature. Screen printing just seems like one of those hobbies that requires you to purchase a lot of expensive equipment just to get started, and then I would feel very committed to screen printing, and would probably feel guilty if I didn't make prints every day on it. I've looked into DIY screen printing set ups, and I think that might also be a fun option. I just need time and motivation! One day I will do it and make awesome things, but for now I will have fun looking at other people's magical screen printed wares, like the fabulous coffee print by Man Vs. Ink!

An altered Moleskine journal I've been holding on to. Love the demeanor of the little boy.

This is my "queen bee" little altered mannequin. It used to be a cheesy lime green pin cushion from the fabric store. I'm highly considering making a ton of those yo yo brooches that you see on her left shoulder.

At times I feel drawn to the vintage feel of altered goodies that is so popular now. Although I usually lean towards bright, cheery colors, I'm starting to get the altered fever...

I started painting again; picking up the pieces of some unfinished wood and canvas paintings that I began months ago. It seems like anytime a major change happens in my life I turn to my art and my music. Art seemed more like the right choice now, since my musical sensibilities have been all but squashed from the stresses of practice and performance this past school year. Soon though...I will be back to my regular practice regimen. I can feel it.

I found this print today in the lovely Farouche shop on Etsy, and I immediately fell in love with it. As cheesy as it may sound to you, I think the new year is a good time to contemplate how we order our lives and what our focus is. I am living in a technological age that moves at the speed of light, and my thoughts seem to be constantly running in circles in my head, a complicated web of computer signals from one end to the other, always jumping to the future or contemplating the past. How many times can I say that I have been truly present in what I am doing? When I get deeply engulfed in the creative process and my mind shuts off the chatter; when I am playing a musical instrument and am transported to an emotion beyond the plane of language - these are the times when I might actually be only in the present. Somehow I need to learn how to live beyond the mundane worries that nag at me and simply be.

New Year Inspiration

In an effort to be more creative this year, I'm going to revive this blog. Recently I've been experimenting with a lot of different mixed media techniques and I hope to share some of my projects here as well as my current musical inspirations and anything else that happens to strike my fancy.

I'll start off with some artist papers I made today just to get the juices flowing. These are really simple to do, and I find that making some simple backgrounds like these helps to start off the creative process if I am having a hard time knowing where to begin. These can be used for fine art projects, art journaling, stationary, or cut up to be used in other mixed media pieces. I used really basic supplies: canvas paper, acrylics, prang watercolors, and a few printing inks. Enjoy...

I stumbled across the Paper Whistle shop today. The work on this site reminds me of some of the things that I want to achieve with my new artwork that I am working on. I love the collages of old photographs and the geometric shapes! This print is called "Universe Kite".

Who doesn't love looking at old photos? I don't who any of these people are, but I like to think that I do, their faces so solemn staring at me from various corners of the studio as I paint. These are the people I've spent the most time with over the past couple of weeks - working them into fantastical landscapes and geometric, art deco patterns, trying to make their antiqued presence fit into my little modern worlds of colors and plants, trees, clouds, and houses painted and pressed onto wood.

I've grown quite attached to all of my house plants recently. There is something about taking care of living, growing, green things that makes me feel very satisfied. Some of my new artwork features my plants - I love implementing their organic shapes with more abstract, geometric elements.
To explain my long absence, I've been in the studio A LOT over the past couple of weeks, working on pieces for the "Wood and Cloth" series that I am about to start showing this Friday! Three succulents in clay pots perch on my kitchen table as an alternative to flowers. Everyone asks me if they are fake because of their waxy fat leaves. My favorite of these is the "String of Buttons" plant on the bottom left.

I fell in love with this hanging plant as soon as I saw it at a farmers market plant sale. I'm not sure what it is called, but I have it hanging next to my desk and it inspires me. It doesn't need a lot of light and it grows downward, with tiny little dot leaves.

Another farmers market find, this ornamental purple clover is really easy to take care of. I've only had it for about 3 weeks and it has already doubled in size, with more sprouts on the way. This plant has a lot of personality - it closes its leaves at night and opens them back up during the day.

I planted these succulents in little white clay pots on my window sill. I love how each one has its own unique shade of green.

Spring Mix

The weather this past week has been rather inconsistent, to say the least. Last Sunday we had snow for the first time in two years, and right now it is a beautiful, balmy, 70 degree Sunday afternoon. It makes me want to paint and create and sew a bunch of springy flowery skirts. I love the sunshine! I am so tired of the cloudy gloominess of winter. Although I will be the first to tell you that I love cloudy days, it is always good to have a change.

I have been working on a lot of art projects for other people. I just finished the CD art for Arthur Alligood, an awesome singer songwriter who is releasing a CD on our record label Homemade Genius Productions on April 4th. The art is very mixed media and includes sewing and drawing, two of my favorite media to work with! I am working on some prints that are similar in style to his album artwork.

I'm also completely revamping our non-profit website, HomemadeGenius.org. What once was a simple myspace page will become a completely image based, rollover, flash driven website! We are going to have free mp3 downloads from all of our artists, podcasts, blogs, and an events calendar to name a few new goodies.

Coffee Time

A friend of mine over at Crummy Knitting has a free pattern for a french press cozy which is adorable! After seeing her free pattern, I decided to post the french cozy that I made recently. It isn't much - just some fabric and ribbon - but in the spirit of coffee I thought I would share it.

I have a mini french press made by Pyrex. It makes just enough coffee for one person, but the coffee doesn't stay warm at all. This cozy is insulated with felt to keep the coffee warm.

The fabric is made by Moda, except for the heart fabric. I'm not sure where I got the ribbon.

This is the inside of the cozy! It is reversible! I've grown quite partial to dots recently. : )

I haven't been using my french press much since Christmas because I received an AMAZING Keurig coffee maker that makes one cup at a time. My coffee collection has expanded and now I don't drink anything but Green Mountain Coffee. It is the best coffee on earth. Organic, fair trade, always fresh (especially with this machine) and never bitter. I haven't been to Starbucks since I started drinking Green Mountain Coffee...I suspect I won't go nearly as often this year as I did last year!

It takes about 30 seconds to make a fresh cup of hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

This is what I drank this morning. It is a cup of coffee in a little filter K Cup. All you do is place it in the machine and it does everything else for you!

Craft Apron

Hi all! Forgive me for my long hiatus from blogging. I had a fabulous holiday and I hope you did, too. Now I am ready to start this new year off right with a fresh dose of blogging!
My wonderful husband bought me a sewing machine for my birthday! It is a Viking Emerald and I love it. It does everything I wanted, and then some, and it is built like a tank. It even has an alphabet! I have been sewing up a storm with this thing - I have only had it for a month now and I have made several projects.
My most recent project was a craft apron. The pattern I used was in the 2007 holiday issue of Adorn Magazine. In the magazine all the pockets are block printed with some really cute cut out patterns designed by The Small Object. I didn't feel like carving the linoleum stamps for this project so I did some applique as decoration instead.
I really miss Adorn magazine. It had a lot of good ideas and patterns in every issue without a ton of irrelevant ads. I only own two copies and I flip through them whenever I need a little bit of inspiration. Now I wish I had bought a subscription when they were still publishing!
You can probably find the Tutorial online somewhere, but if you can't find one, I will be happy to post one. It was extremely easy and fun to make and I think I will have just as much fun wearing it!

I just love this little heart pincushion! Here you can see some light green bias tape on the left that I used to bind off the edges. I have never used bias tape before, but it was really easy and it gives the edges a nice finished look.

So, things have been going well. I just wanted to blog something since it's been a while. These are some of the things that have been inspiring me lately. I am working on a lot of new artwork but none of it is ready to photograph yet! Maybe I will be able to show off some stuff on here this weekend.

I am thoroughly not ready for the holidays at all. Every year the holidays are more and more unwelcome to me. I just get tired of all the materialism that shrouds Christmas, and I hate that for most people that is all they think about when they hear the word "Christmas". Ian wants to volunteer for Meals on Wheels this year. I think it will be neat, but hard. We want to play music for the shut ins when we deliver the meals. Whenever we have played at Hospice it was always nice to see how happy the music made the patients, but it's hard not to get emotional when you realize how much time they really have left and what their life must be like now.

Anyway, I am trying to cook more now and I've been utilizing allrecipes.com a lot. I'm sure I will find something new to whip up for Thanksgiving next week!

This is an amazing blog written by one of my absolute favorite authors, Don Miller. He is the author of the famed book Blue Like Jazz and several other good reads. He talks of the ultra conservative environment of his childhood, and how he came to realize that he was taught to live in fear by the very people who claimed to live by the Bible, where Jesus teaches us that we are to be guided by faith, not fear.

I really enjoyed this article, and I hope that if you were disappointed about yesterdays outcome, you will read this and maybe start to have a little hope in a man that stands for inspiration and change.

Autumnal Rambles

Fall always reminds me of school. Reading, studying, learning, taking walks with 90 pound book bags around campus and drinking cheap powdered vanilla cappuccino. Every fall since I have been out of school I've done the same thing - read. I remember last year I discovered Good Reads and started a bookshelf so I would start reading again. It was lovely while it lasted, but then work and other responsibilities set in and I stopped making time for my books. Winter weather and the holidays came and my books started getting lonely without me, and I think by the spring they completely forgot that we were once friends. This year I am trying to make it stick. I have a built up urge to read more than ever before. When I am reading I feel productive, and even though I'm not getting anything done in the physical sense, words inspire me. When I read I feel like I can let everything else in my life go and just be in the moment. I think it actually helps me loosen up my mind - so therefore reading must be a step in my creative process.

Anyway, I'm reading a lot of books right now. Thats how I like it. I always read more than one book at a time - I think I just get ADD about it. I've renewed my library card and made a little more use of it than usual. I also feel like a good citizen when I go to the library. I shouldn't, since all I am doing is taking advantage of the public gift, and not doing anything to help the library or make it better. That's why I always return my books late because I know they need the money. Sort of.

In other news, I've been cooking slightly healthier recently. I'm trying to eat a half of a grapefruit everyday for breakfast and eat some kind of raw vegetable for lunch. I only ate out twice last week, and I rode my bike once so one of the eat-out-meals doesn't really count. Today I will probably make an acorn squash!

I think I will start a new big painting today and see what happens. I will be off Monday and most of Tuesday for the school holiday, so I need to start getting productive now and take advantage of this extra hour of sleep that I got last night.

I hope all of you know who you are going to vote for by now. If you don't, you disappoint me.

my old friends

I have been reading "March" by Geraldine Brooks - a novel about the civil war chaplin and father of the Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy in Little Women. So far I am intrigued by the way the characters are growing and transforming as the story progresses and they are faced with the various moral crises during the rocky civil war. I would recommend this book if you are looking for a good read.

On Jane Austen:

I've read all the Austen novels, some two and three times, and I am still discovering new ways to enjoy her work! I just stumbled upon the Jane Austen Society of North America website and I can't believe that 4,000 people across North America actually get together and talk, read, have tea, and dance Jane Austen. There is actually a regional group in my state, SC, so maybe one day I will have to join. It sounds like such fun. In the mean time, I might actually read all the books again. I haven't read any Austen yet this year and the year is almost gone. Although I did enjoy Becoming Jane and The Jane Austen Book Club - two modern movies with Jane Austen themes. The latter actually surprised me. It wasn't really about Jane Austen as much as about real life and how good literature really can change your way of thinking and your life. I really enjoyed it though I was skeptical of the story line at first.

I started learning how to screen print at the arts center downtown. I am amazed at how much work and precision goes into simply printing a one color design - not to mention two or more colors! I think I am going to really enjoy it.

As usual, I started out hating this painting but now that it's done I love it! My favorite part is the vintage European map in the background - only visible enough to add texture. I have about three more projects similar to this in the works that I am excited about. Yay.

I'm glad that my Etsy shop is filling up with more artwork like this.

Starting a screen printing class tomorrow at the arts center. I have always wanted to learn how to screen print but have never had the opportunity or the instruction. I think it will be fun. Hopefully I will be able to find someone to help me build a huge light box for the class.

I also made loose leaf earl grey tea in my french press today and it was soooo good. I would definitely recommend it. Especially on a day like today when it was all rainy and chilly all day.

I have been putting off ordering a big batch of music online for my students. It's funny that I am so untrusting of online stores when I expect people to trust their money with me at my shop. I have had too many people rip me off, I suppose. And I have already had to cancel one debit card because of unauthorized charges which were probably due to me buying something online.

I love looking through my old sketchbooks from when I used to take time on making my sketches look really detailed and interesting or even just experimental. It's hard, for some reason, for me to spend time on sketches now. As soon as it gets to a certain point in the process, I immediately want to turn it into a painting. I have gotten in the habit of thinking of sketching as a waste of time even though I know it isn't! I've always wanted to do sketches for the Illustration Friday but every week I forget until the last minute. Maybe I will make it to the deadline this Friday and make myself work on a really good sketch.

This weekend I have been trying to get some more products in my shop. I found some really neat vintage woven houndstooth at an antique store that I am using on some of my new goods! Stay tuned for pictures.

Today I made my first sale! I sold two of my cutest (in my opinion) pouches. I can't believe my little owls will be going to another home. I was starting to get a little bit discouraged about my shop, and today I was even thinking to myself that I need to stay positive about it. And then I found that I had made that sale! Sweet stuff. So now I am even more pumped about making some new things for the shop.

Today was a beautiful day! It is starting to feel like fall - cooling off some. My neighbors were on their porch swings leisurely rocking in the refreshing breeze. Kind of a symbolic piece - one of my diagrams depicting aspects of a believer's spiritual walk. It is in a natural wood shadow box with a glass cover. The colors in this picture aren't as bright as they are in real life, sadly. I think this is the first time that I was really free and abstract with the way I put the fabrics together while still paying attention to balance and color. My favorite part of this is the yellow velvet rick rack at the top!

I saw "Burn After Reading" yesterday - it was pretty disappointing and hard to sit through. Most of the comedy came off too dark to be funny to me, but I give them kudos for trying to make a modern Alfred Hitchcock style movie - some parts reminded me of "The Trouble with Harry" or "Rope". All in all I give it a 1 1/2 out of five. If you were thinking about going to see Burn After Reading I would suggest renting either of those instead. Also try "Rear Window" - one of my all time favorites.

I also saw the classic french children's film Red Balloon last night on TCM at around 2am. It was awesome! Only thirty minutes long but I nearly cried at the end - so powerful.

I need a red balloon to be my best friend.

This is where I will post my new projects and other happenings!

This is my newest acrylic on wood painting. I like putting together unique color combinations, however I haven't really experimented with a lot of super bright and neon colors which are used a lot in sixties pop art. I am really happy with the way it turned out and I think it looks pretty on my yellow easel.

My best description = french provincial pop art. : )

I will probably sell it on my Etsy shop once I think of a good title.

I've tried a lot of different blogging websites and I really think blogger is the way to go - it's a lot more accessible to people who don't have blogs themselves and you don't have to be a "member" of the blogging site to post a comment.
